Redmi 5A Review

Xiaomi has become India’s highest Selling Mid-range smartphone for the previous quarter and now the brand has launched a new smartphone Redmi 5A. The device is priced at Rs 5999 and Rs 6999. As the brand had a great achievement for previous quarter sales they are selling first 5 Million devices for Rs 4999. This device will compete the recently launched Infoucs and Coolpad smartphones.

Design & Display

The design of the device is pretty simple where it comes with a metallic body unlike the Redmi 4A which was launched last year. It has 5-inch HD display with 5MP Selfie Camera on the front along with capacitive touch buttons at the bottom. The back panel of the device is metallic and has a 13 MP camera on the top left along with LED flash, Mi branding and speaker grille on the bottom. On the Top Edge you can find the 3.5mm audio jack and IR Blaster in the center. You can find the volume locker and power button on the right edge and SIM card slot & memory card slot on left Edge. There is a Micro USB slot on the bottom along with Mic adjacent to it.

Coming to the display, Redmi 5A has 5-inch Display with 1280 x 720 pixel resolution and 296 Pixel Density. While spending some time with the device we found there isn’t any visibility issue under direct sunlight. At this price range what Xiaomi has provided is impeccable. Upgrading from plastic to metallic body makes the device more unique unlike Redmi 4A.

Hardware and Performance

Redmi 5A is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 octa-core processor clocked at 1.4 GHz coupled with Adreno 308 GPU. The brand has launched device in two variants – 2GB RAM with 16GB storage and 3GB RAM with 32GB internal stoarge. There is a dedicated Micro SD card slot where the storage can be expanded to 128 GB.

While using the device we found that the performance was good considering it as entry level phone. The device was not that quick while operating heavy apps and multitasking was bit slow. Moving to gaming, we played few basic games on smartphone and didn’t find any lag. But eventually the device heated to some extent while using the camera and playing games continuously. We have run some benchmark applications to test the device and here are their respective scores.

UI & Apps

Redmi 5A comes with MIUI 9 based Android 7.1.0 Nougat out of the box. This is the first smartphone by the brand that comes with MIUI 9 pre loaded. The New UI makes the device more elegant and easy to use. The device comes with few pre-loaded applications like Amazon, WPS Office, UC News and few Microsoft Apps.

The device comes with 13 MP rear camera with f/2.2 aperture, phase detection, autofocus and LED flash adjacent to it. The camera lags a bit when you open, but then once its live its fast and quick. It records 1080p videos @ 30fps; Geo-tagging, touch focus, face/smile detection, HDR and panorama are the features available on the device. The different modes on the device include panorama, manual, straighten, beautify, HTT, Scene, and Tilt-shift. There is Audio Mode where you need to speak shoot/capture to click photo on your device. While speaking about the front camera, it has 5 MP camera with f/2.0 aperture that helps in capturing selfie.

Battery & Connectivity

Redmi 5A comes with 3000 mAh Li-ion Polymer battery and runs on Android 7.1 Nougat. The battery size is good for budget centric device with 1280x720p resolution and Snapdragon 425 on it. While using it as secondary device for few days we observed that the battery backup lasted for about 11-12 hours on a single charge. Redmi 5A is a dual SIM smartphone and support dual standby. It does support 4G VoLTE on both the SIM card unlike the Redmi 4A. WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0, 2G/3G/4G Network, IR blaster are few connectivity features avaialble on the device. With IR Blaster you can control AC, TVs or any other any IR enabled applications on Redmi 5A.

Xiaomi Redmi 5A is priced at Rs 4999, which is one of the best phone that can be purchased at this price range for specification it provide. The best thing about the device is it comes with Qualcomm processor, 13MP camera and 3000 mAh battery. There isn’t any fingerprint sensor on this device or else it would have been a complete pack.
